The procedure involves creating a smaller stomach pouch and rerouting the small intestine to bypass a portion of it. This results in reduced food intake and decreased absorption of nutrients, leading to weight loss.

 

Key Components of Gastric Bypass: 

1- Stomach Pouch Creation:

During gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This pouch is typically about the size of a walnut and serves as the new, smaller stomach. The rest of the stomach is "bypassed" and is no longer involved in the digestion process. 


2- Rerouting of the Small Intestine:

The small intestine is then divided, and the lower part is attached directly to the stomach pouch. The upper part of the small intestine is reconnected further down, creating a Y-shaped configuration. This bypasses a portion of the small intestine, reducing the absorption of calories and nutrients. 


3- Restriction and Malabsorption:

Gastric bypass achieves weight loss through two primary mechanisms: 

* Restriction: 

The smaller stomach pouch limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time, leading to a feeling of fullness with smaller meals.
